Sankasia in located in central
Uttar Pradesh. Sankasia holds a great importance in the Buddhist
pilgrimage sites. It is said that Buddha wanted to preach his
mother, Queen Maya, the ultimate truth and attainment of Nirvana.
In the process of pioneering the ladies to become monks, Lord
Buddha decided to preach his mother, although she was dead. It
is said he went to heaven and preached his mother and descended
back to earth. The place he descended on was Sankasia.
Today Sankasia is nothing but a place full of ruins. The Chinese travelers to
India in the 6th century have mentioned this place. An Ashoka pillar with an
elephant capital can be seen here along with small Buddha temple. |
